Heiko Klaas is one of the 20 esports talents sponsored by Deutsche Bahn. At the DB Esports Talent Summit, he prevailed against other talents and has been receiving comprehensive support from the esports player foundation (epf) since December. He plays Brawl Stars and is an enthusiastic chess player. In this interview, he explains the parallels between esports and his job as a train traffic controller.

Question: Hello Heiko, what do you do at Deutsche Bahn and in which title are you supported by the epf?

Heiko: I’m training to be a train traffic controller and am also supported by the DB Esports Scholarship from epf.

Question: You are also a keen chess player – how did you get into chess and Brawl Stars?

Heiko: I started playing chess in elementary school with my classmates and discovered Brawl Stars at a chess tournament at the end of 2018. Since then, I’ve enjoyed both and haven’t stopped playing either.

Question: What similarities do you see between Brawl Stars and chess?

Heiko: Both games require a high degree of tactical skill in order to anticipate your opponent’s next moves and prevent them prophylactically. In both Brawl Stars and Chess, players must constantly adapt their strategies to take account of changing conditions.

Question: Which skills that you learned in Brawl Stars and chess are useful to you in your everyday life at Deutsche Bahn and vice versa?

Heiko: In esports and as a dispatcher, precise communication is essential, while in chess and at work, forward thinking, the ability to keep track of things and plan your next moves are crucial.

Question: What motivates you most to be active in different areas such as esports, chess and your job at Deutsche Bahn?

Answer: Above all, the fun of the game and the fact that I don’t like losing. As a result, I try not to make mistakes and, above all, not to repeat previous mistakes. This attitude enables me to continuously improve.

Question: What advice would you give to others who are interested in pursuing different passions and careers like you?

Answer: Only do what you enjoy, and once you’ve found something you like, keep at it and continuously strive for improvement.
